A Tribute to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, poetry, View from Below, by Joan Ellen Gage

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg

 View from Below

What have you done to deserve

this? you say, not expecting an answer. We

have all asked this, at one time or

another, when we are hurt, or under

 attack on some unexpected front.

We usually do not see the blow, or

brick falling on our head, until it hits us. Then

BAM it strikes us to the heart and

soul of our being, we are floored, pinned

unable to move and uncertain of what to do.

Eventually, we get up and limp along,

try to get that “stiff upper lip” thing

going on, moving through the motions

until some sense of normalcy eventually

creeps in and healing takes place.

As women, we need be strong enough to

survive these affronts. We

HAVE to, if we want to continue to

grow and compete in this world, and we

 WILL do it, too!

We will believe and achieve all

that we must do. We

will do this together, you and I.

Make a promise today to help your sisters

when they are down, raise them up.

Raise them up, and believe in them, and they

WILL succeed

Let’s go girls!

Can you Embrace the Fierce? Poetry by Joan Ellen Gage

Mary–Embracing the Fierce
Good morning! Are we feeling fierce, today? No, well, read on and embrace the fierce!
Fierce

Can you do it?
Can you embrace the fierce,
bring it to the surface
of your being?
Your wounded warrior heart
beats, it has survived
in spite of you.
It is time to claim
this aspect of yourself,
to integrate it into your existence.
We are all Viking daughters,
armed, ready to do battle,
surrendering to no one,
not even ourselves.
The ancient one lies within.
Awaken her.
Awaken the power
Of your fierce warrior self.

Accepting yourself, faults and all!

Can you see the real me?

Acceptance

It’s the hardest thing a woman can do

To accept herself as she is, faults and all

And rise above Western civilizations’ criticism

Our society has created a model

That few can touch—

Ultra thin, flawless, plus giant breasts

Based on the “Barbie” doll figure

Women come in all shapes and sizes

Each perfect in their own way

Women must find their own exquisiteness

And embrace and love themselves

Their unique and wonderful selves!

Unfinished Works of Art

A Woman for All Ages

Here is a shock for you

Not all of us are moms who do it all

Or are executives, who crashed the glass ceiling,

Left, and found their “true calling”

Some of us have just been trying to make a living

Worker bees, who buried creative or other needs,

Like self-expression, under a load of work and life

It happens and time passes

I swallowed the work ethic myth hook, line and sinker

I was the “perfect” employee—hard working

Taking a personal interest in my job

My Mary Poppins’ era; but, it left nothing for me

50 opened up my eyes

I still work hard, but now I work for me

First and foremost, I take care of myself

And my responsibilities to family

As time passes, we need to deal with

And understand what lessons each decade teaches us

Hopefully we learn and embrace the wisdom

From our experiences, and in turn,

These life lessons flesh out

Who we are becoming and who we grow to be

We are unfinished works of art

The book not yet completed

The half-carved sculpture

To be unveiled by the universe

And not at a time of our choosing

So let the journey unfold, and may your story be told!

I hope you enjoyed the art and the poem, dear reader. Have a wonderful one!

TIME TO WAKE UP!

MIDLIFE CLOCK

 by Joan Ellen Gage

Time,
Too much, not enough,
Too slow, too fast,
Forever tick, tick, ticking
Away . . .
Time,
We wish it
Here . . .
We wish it
Gone . . .
Time,
Feel it
Trickling, teasing
Through your fingers,
Sifting between
Your toes . . .
You
Are the hourglass,
Your time is running
Out, tick, tock.
Half of the sand
Of your being
Has dwindled away.
Your vital force
Diminishes, as
Grain by
Tiny grain,
Your essence
Erodes . . .
Wake up!
It’s half past
Your life!
Hello my friends! It’s time to get our mojo working! We can do it, let’s go ladies! Remember, women rock!

Tips for Staying "in the Now", by Joan Ellen Gage

Joan’s tips for being present:

As usual, I struggle with staying in the now. My go to is to get outside with my dog. Watching her keeps me present and I realize how blessed I am to have this wonderful creature as my friend. If you don’t have a pet, maybe you can “borrow” one!

The second thing I do to stay present is to watch the sunset or sunrise. If you can’t watch a real one, watch one on the net. There are a lot of youtube videos, like this one:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbaJ1SPjLnc

Namaste, y’all!

Joan Ellen Gage launches the Rose Edition of her book, Water Running Downhill, Words of Empowerment!, on 11/6/2015

Rose Helena Macedo Kull

This week I published the Rose Edition of Water Running Downhill, Words of Empowerment! This edition is a project that had been on the back burner for a while. Rose’s passing jump-started me to create the new version of Water Running Downhill! (WRDH), honoring this  wonderful, inspiring woman.

The spirit of WRDH contains passages that will speak to women of the foibles of aging, growth, joy, humor, and self-love.I hope my readers enjoy the new book, which contains reworked photos, and two new poems.

May peace be with you, and your troubles be few, and don’t forget to travel at the speed of now! Here is a poem from the new edition, enjoy!

And the contents

May have settled

During handling

But each piece is

An individually crafted

Unique work of art

A truly one of a kind

The Fountain of ‘Spoof’

Karen in the Fountain of ‘Spoof’
Blessings, everyone!  Please enjoy the poem.
Joan
Fountain of Spoof

First come the little
“Smile” lines by the eyes.
After a while, lines deepen
And are followed by brow furrows,
Complemented with “marionette” lines
On each side of the mouth.
(I swear that is what those in the know
Are calling them!)
Our first defense consists of lotions
And creams that we literally slather
On our skin; most of these products
Don’t do much, or live up to our expectations.
I personally will attest to this; however,
I continue to try the latest and greatest
Hoping for a mini-miracle or at least
Some hint of positive progress.
I guess I’ll settle for preventive maintenance
I.E. try to stay where I’m at,
Rather than trying to reverse the
Hands of time on the ‘wrinkle clock’.
We certainly need to smile more;
Nothing looks better on us.
Let’s work on keeping our chins up
Even if we have to pull ’em up and tie them there!
